Washington Sundar ruled out of cricket ahead of T20 World Cup 2026

Washington Sundar

Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar is set to miss the remaining matches of the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand after suffering a side strain injury. With the series being played over a short span, the team management is unlikely to take risks, especially as he is part of the T20 World Cup 2026 squad.

If Washington Sundar is ruled out, he will become the second Indian player to miss the ongoing ODI series. Earlier, Rishabh Pant was sidelined after getting hit on his right side during a practice session at BCA Stadium in Vadodara. Following Pant’s injury, the in-form Dhruv Jurel was included in the ODI squad.

Washington Sundar Suffered Injury During 1st ODI vs New Zealand

Washington Sundar picked up a side strain during the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara on Sunday, January 11. He suffered the injury while trying to stop the ball off his own bowling and showed visible discomfort soon after.

The all-rounder had already bowled five overs and conceded 27 runs before he walked off the field midway through New Zealand’s innings. He was seen holding his side and back and did not return to the field, with Nitish Kumar Reddy replacing him as a substitute fielder.

Sundar has had repeated injury troubles in recent times. Recently, he recovered from a finger injury just before the Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad and still played a part in India’s innings-and-140-run victory in that match.

According to Sports Tak, Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the ODI series, with the BCCI set to announce it officially soon. Despite carrying discomfort, the all-rounder still came out to bat at No. 8 and played a crucial role in India’s run chase, which ended in a four-wicket win.

Sundar stayed till the end to help India finish the chase. He supported KL Rahul as the pair guided the team home with six balls still left. Sundar scored an unbeaten 7 runs in a 27-run stand off 16 balls for the eighth wicket with KL Rahul (29*). India chased down the target of 301 in 49 overs.

The second ODI will be played in Rajkot on January 14, followed by the final match in Indore on January 18. After the ODI series, the two teams will play a five-match T20I series in preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026.

Shubman Gill's Update on Washington Sundar

India captain Shubman Gill confirmed after the match that Washington Sundar has picked up a side strain and will undergo a scan to assess the injury.

“Sundar has a side strain and will go for a scan after the match,” India captain Shubman Gill said at the post-match presentation.

KL Rahul said that he did not know the seriousness of Sundar’s injury while they were batting. Rahul mentioned that he was only aware of some discomfort earlier in the game and was happy that they still managed to guide India to the finish.

“I didn’t know he couldn’t run. I knew he had some discomfort in the first innings, but wasn’t aware of the extent. He was striking the ball really well,” he told the host broadcaster.
