If We Had Special Device In The Ball..: Mohammed Shami Slams Ex-Pakistan Cricketer For Bizarre ‘Ball’ Claim During World Cup

India fast-bowler Mohammed Shami has once again responded to the controversial claims made by Pakistani media regarding the ball during the 2023 World Cup.

With India’s pacers blowing away opposition and looking almost unplayable, former Pakistan cricketer Hasan Raza gave a highly controversial statement. The former cricketer alleged that the Indian bowlers were receiving a different ball from the ICC or the BCCI which was helping them to swing the ball. He had also called for an inspection, saying:

“The way Siraj and Shami were swinging the ball, it seemed like the ICC or the BCCI were giving them different and suspicious balls in the second innings. An inspection is required to be done on the ball. There might be an additional layer of coating for a better swing.”

The comments had come after India bowled out Sri Lanka for just 55 runs thanks to a sensational five-wicket haul from Mohammed Shami. Raza had faced severe criticism for his bizarre claims during the World Cup. Even former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram had lashed out at him and asked him to not humiliate the entire country in the process of shaming himself.

Mohammed Shami reacts to Hasan Raza’s comments:

While no member of the Indian team reacted to Raza’s claims during the World Cup, Mohammed Shami did. The star pacer took to Instagram to slam Raza, asking the former Pakistan cricketer to have some shame and focus on the game.

In a recent event, Mohammed Shami spoke about the controversy once again. Speaking on Agenda Aajtak, the 33-year old said that he burst out laughing when he heard Raza’s claims for the first time. He also disclosed that he wanted to make a video debunking the claims, but did not want to add fuel to the fire.

“Does this ball have any device? (laughs while looking at the ball). When I heard this, I wondered ‘how can someone ask such a stupid question?’. Even I think about it (that claim) now, I am not able to control my laughter,” Mohammed Shami said on Aajtak.

“How can a player know which ball is used? And those talks of a device fitted in the ball and all that…can’t believe it.

“I was thinking of making a video on it. But I didn’t do one because it would have created more chatter. I thought of taking the ball and breaking it and showing it to people whether there is something different inside or not,” Shami said.

The India star went on to give a hilarious statement on the controversy, saying: “Okay, even if we had some special device in the ball, what if we press the wrong button? What if press in-swing instead of out-swing?

“I didn’t expect that someone who played the game at the highest level can speak like this. I don’t think such things should be said. It’s not relevant at all,” he added.

Shami finished the World Cup as the highest wicket-taker despite not playing the first four games. The right-arm pacer picked up a staggering 24 wickets in just 7 matches with the help of a record three five-wicket hauls.
