AUS vs PAK: David Warner Breaks Steve Waugh’s Record To Become 2nd Leading Run Getter For Australia

David Warner

Veteran Australian opener David Warner achieved a significant milestone during the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan. David Warner surpassed Steve Waugh’s record to become the second-highest run-scorer for Australia across all three formats in international cricket.

Shan Masood chose to bowl first in the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday, December 26. Australia retained the same playing XI, while Pakistan made three changes, with Mohammad Rizwan, Hasan Ali, and Mir Hamza returning to the lineup.

Abdullah Shafique Drops David Warner’s Simple Catch

Pakistan missed an early opportunity to dismiss David Warner as Abdullah Shafique dropped a straightforward catch off Shaheen Afridi’s delivery on the last ball of the third over. The southpaw was batting on 2 runs when his catch was dropped on the opening day.

Afridi delivered an impressive ball that angled in and then moved away. The left-handed batter nicked the ball, and the catch opportunity was straightforward, coming at a comfortable height. However, Shafique, stationed at first slip dropped one of the simplest of chances.

Warner’s innings came to an end just before lunch as he was dismissed for 38 off 83 balls. Parttime off-spinner Agha Salman induced a thick outside edge from Warner on the first ball of the 28th over. Babar Azam, at first slip, took the catch to provide breakthrough.

David Warner Breaks Steve Waugh’s Record In Boxing Day Test

David Warner completed 18,500 international runs during the ongoing Test match in Melbourne. The opening batter became the second-leading run-getter for Australia across formats, behind Ricky Ponting. He is likely to hold the record for an extended period of time.

Ricky Ponting tops the list with a total of 27,368 runs in 667 innings at an average of 45.84. Warner scored 18,515 runs in 460 innings at an average of 42.56, including 49 centuries and 93 fifties. Waugh, Allan Border, and Michael Clarke are in the top 5 of the elite list.

No Better Way To Silence Critics – David Warner

During the first Test match against Pakistan, David Warner reacted to Mitchell Johnson’s criticism, stating that putting runs on the board is the most effective way to silence critics.

“It is my job to come out here and score runs and that was from the get-go to put pressure on the Pakistan bowlers. I got a couple of partnerships going, first with Uzzie (Khawaja) and then with Smudge (Smith). It’s just another Test match hundred for Australia and it is something that we try our best to do when we walk out there,” Warner told Adam Gilchrist.

“It feels great, there is a lot of runs out there to be put on the board for the bowlers to bowl at. There is always going to be criticism, and you gotta take that and no better way to silence it than to put runs on the board,” he concluded.

Earlier, Mitchell Johnson questioned the celebratory send-off given to Warner, describing him as a ‘struggling’ Test cricketer. The former Australian pacer highlighted Warner’s association with the controversial Sandpaper Gate scandal against South Africa in 2018.
