Jasprit Bumrah, on Thursday (November 2), came up with yet another brilliant bowling display as Team India thrashed Sri Lanka by a record margin of 302 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Asked to bat first, India recovered from a disastrous start to post a massive total. The Men in Blue lost the wicket of their in-form captain Rohit Sharma for just 4 runs in the very first over. However, brilliant knocks from Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer guided the team to a massive total of 357 for 8 in the allotted 50 overs.
Gill and Kohli shared a partnership of 189 runs for the second wicket before departing for 92 and 88 respectively in quick succession. Iyer then played a quickfire knock of 82 runs from just 57 balls to help India cross the 300-run mark. Ravindra Jadeja also played a useful cameo of 35 runs to take the score past the 350-run mark.
And the huge total turned out to be too much for Sri Lanka in the end as they were bowled out for just 55 runs. It was the third time this year that India bowled out Sri Lanka for less than 100 runs in an ODI. In January, they had bowled out the Islanders for 73 runs before wrapping up their innings for just 50 runs in the Asia Cup final.
And just like the previous two occasions, Sri Lanka’s batters looked clueless against India’s bowlers in the latest encounter. After Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj’s brilliant opening spell, Mohammed Shami once again starred with the ball and picked up his second five-wicket haul in three innings. He picked up 5 wickets while Siraj accounted for three.
Jasprit Bumrah creates history:
Although Jasprit Bumrah didn’t have the highest number of wickets for Team India in the game, the single wicket he took was enough for him to make history. He became the first-ever bowler from India to take a wicket on the very first ball of the innings in the World Cup.
The right-arm pacer trapped opener Pathum Nissanka in front of the wicket to give India a perfect start with the ball. He finished the game with figures of 1 for 8 in 5 overs.
