Why BCCI chose Shreyas Iyer over Sanju Samson as T20I captain

Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer

Sanju Samson's T20I future has come under the scanner after another disappointing performance with the bat. A few months ago, Sanju Samson was being seen as one of the strongest candidates to become India's next T20 captain after Suryakumar Yadav.

But things have changed now, and his recent performances have raised fresh questions. However, the Indian cricket team management is still showing faith in the senior wicketkeeper-batter, but the pressure is increasing with every match.

BCCI wanted Sanju Samson as T20I Captain, But Agarkar backed Shreyas Iyer

At the same time, 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is waiting for his chance, and another failure could make it difficult for Samson to keep his place in India’s T20I team.

Amid the constant scrutiny, a Dainik Jagran Sports journalist, Abhishek Tripathi, has made the shocking revelations that Shreyas Iyer was not the first choice for India’s T20I captaincy among the BCCI board members. He revealed that some people within the BCCI wanted Sanju Samson to take over the T20 captaincy after Suryakumar Yadav.

However, Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar was reportedly not in favor of making Samson the captain because of his inconsistent performances. And that’s why Shreyas Iyer was picked as the new T20I captain. Now, Samson's recent poor form has made Agarkar’s concerns look even more serious.

Sanju Samson's form raises big Questions

Samson’s form has left many concerned. During India's ICC T20 World Cup-winning campaign earlier this year, he was one of the team's biggest heroes. He scored more than 300 runs in just five innings and played a huge role in helping India lift the trophy at home.

He carried the same form into IPL 2026, where he had another impressive season. Samson scored 477 runs in 13 innings for Chennai Super Kings in the tournament. But after returning to international cricket, he failed to deliver with the bat despite strong backing.

The Kerala star was dismissed for just 5 and 0 in the two-match T20I series against Ireland. His struggles continued in the first T20I against England in Durham, where he managed only one run. Parthiv Patel makes blunt remark over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's India debut.

Even after these failures, the Indian team management has decided to continue backing the experienced batter instead of giving an opportunity to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The teenage star is still waiting for his international debut, but he will have to wait for his chances.

Dinesh Karthik breaks silence on Sanju Samson's poor form

Well, Dinesh Karthik admitted that Sanju Samson is under pressure after failing in three consecutive innings. However, the former Indian wicketkeeper believes that India should continue backing Samson because he proved himself by performing brilliantly in the T20 World Cup earlier this year.

Karthik said on Cricbuzz: “Sanju Samson has, once again, had a bit of a failure. Now three innings on the bounce means the calls are coming nice and loud for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, but I would still say, Sanju Samson, player of the tournament in the World Cup, he is under pressure.”

He added, “I know the whole cricketing world is going to be like, 'Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, when is he going to get in? 'That is understandable, but I still hope they back someone like Sanju Samson because, under pressure in the World Cup a few months ago, he got the job done, so we have to back him.”
