Watch: Shubman Gill was given a reprieve early on in the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup Super Fours game today (September 10) as an outside edge off Naseem Shah flew through first and second slips in the eighth over of the innings.
Gill started off in supreme fashion in Colombo after he meandered his way to a 32-ball 10 against the same opponents last week. He hit Shaheen Shah Afridi for six boundaries in the space of two overs, including a picturesque lofted straight drive coming down the track.
Naseem Shah at the other end, however, was breathing fire and making life tough for Rohit Sharma, who played and missed at him several times.
Gill came on strike against Naseem in the eighth over and found more success than his opening partner. He brought out his trademark punch-slap off the back foot to pick up another boundary. Two balls later, however, Naseem almost had his revenge.
A short and wide ball that had extra bounce found Gill’s outside edge as he threw his hands at it. But, the ball flew between first and second slip. In defence of the fielders, Mohammad Rizwan looked keen on pouching the catch in his gloves, taking a couple of steps to his right across them which possibly put them off. In the end, none of them went for the catch and the ball raced away to the boundary.
Gill went on to add 24 more runs to his tally before he was dismissed by Shaheen for 58 off 52 balls.
