England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick opened up opener Jason Roy’s omission from the national team for the highly anticipated ODI World Cup 2023. Marcus Trescothick stated that Jason Roy can still make a significant impact as a reserve for the marquee tournament.
Jason Roy was included in England’s 15-member provisional squad for the World Cup. The right-handed batter suffered recurrent back spasms, leading him to miss the white-ball series against New Zealand. He failed to make it into the final squad for the showpiece event.
Jason Roy Is Surely Disappointed – Marcus Trescothick
Marcus Trescothick stressed the significance of Jason Roy maintaining his fitness and readiness, as he could be called upon in case of an injury to one of the selected players.
“I’ve not spoken to Jason, he’s surely disappointed but you’ve got to remain positive that he can still make an impact. Reserves have a big part in World Cups,” Trescothick said as quoted by Sky Cricket.
“You pick up one injury and someone comes in, they could come in and make a hell of a lot of runs. If he keeps himself fit and ready to go, should we need him to come out, then we’ll make that call.”
The 33-year-old batter has been in excellent form this year, scoring 278 runs in six ODIs at an average of 46.33, including two centuries. Notably, he also missed the T20 World Cup in Australia, as he was dropped just before the mega event due to poor form.
It Was A Good Opportunity For Him – Marcus Trescothick
The former England opener emphasized that Jason Roy had the opportunity to perform against Ireland but declined it after being left out of the World Cup squad.
“It was a good opportunity for him to play a longer innings and play a bit more. We know how much of a talent he is, it’s his opportunity – getting the chance to play is going to be the real challenge for him. It’s a good team, trying to break into it is tough,” Trescothick further stated.
Jason Roy decided to skip the ongoing Ireland ODIs after being left out of the England World Cup squad. Notably, he has also terminated his central contract with the ECB to participate in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023.
