IND vs WI: “The Way Tilak Varma Batted, It Gave Me A Lot Of Confidence” – Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav

The No.1 ranked T20I batsman in the world, Suryakumar Yadav, won the Player of the Match award for his terrific batting show in the third T20I against West Indies National Cricket Team at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Tuesday, August 08.

Chasing the target of 160 runs in the match, India got off to an awful start. The new opening pair of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal didn’t have any impact on the game. Debutant Jaiswal was back in the pavilion after scoring just 1 run and Gill’s horror show on the West Indies tour continued as he scored 6 runs.

After losing early wickets, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma joined forces to help India get back in the game. Both the batters looked amazing in the middle and played an attacking brand of cricket.

Suryakumar Yadav smashed outstanding 83 runs off 44 balls, with 10 fours and 4 sixes, before getting dismissed by Alzarri Joseph. He was involved in a terrific 87-run partnership with Tilak Varma that helped India win the match by 7 wickets. With the comfortable victory, India managed to keep the series alive.

It was really important to be myself – Suryakumar Yadav

Speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Player of the Match award winner Suryakumar Yadav said:

“It was really important to be myself when I went in to bat in the powerplay, that’s what the team management also wanted.”

While talking about his 360-degree game, Suryakumar Yadav said that he has practiced innovative shots a lot and for a long period. Suryakumar also showered rich praise on the 20-year-old batter Tilak Varma, who missed out on his fifty by just one run. He said:

“I have practised these (ramps and scoops) strokes a lot and I love doing that. We (himself and Tilak) have batted together for a long time, we both understand how each other bats and the way he batted, it gave me a lot of confidence. It was a great innings from him (Tilak) at the other end.”

It was running on the back of my mind (that India had never lost three T20Is in a row) but at the same time we spoke in the team meeting, our captain said someone needs to put their hand up and win the match, glad I was able to do that,” Suryakumar Yadav concluded.

Meanwhile, this was the 12th Player of the Match award for Suryakumar Yadav in 51 T20Is and now he is only behind Virat Kohli’s tally of 15.
