India National Cricket Team captain Shubman Gill opened up on the performance of his side in the final ODI of the three-match series against the England National Cricket Team on Sunday, July 19. England beat India by 27 runs to win the series 1-2. England came back after losing the first match.
Speaking after the loss, Shubman Gill was gutted and said the team failed to execute their plans in this final ODI match at Lord’s in London. He praised the collective effort from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. This another series loss for Shubman Gill away from home.
Ben Duckett went berserk against Shubman Gill's side
England won the toss and opted to bat first, as in the series decider, the home side made just one change, bringing in Josh Tongue for Saqib Mahmood. While the Men in Blue side made three changes, Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar were ruled out for the final match; they brought in Prince Yadav and Arshdeep Singh, and KL Rahul replaced Shivam Dube.
Openers Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell were off to a breezy start, as both of them were on song from the very first over of the game and built a 192-run partnership between them as the two batters scored half-centuries, with the latter missing out on a well-deserved century as Bethell was out on 91 runs.
Duckett, despite the wicket, did not stop his carnage batting as he continued smashing the India bowlers all over the park and scored 141 runs, which is the highest individual score at Lord’s, surpassing the previous record of the great Sir Vivian Richards, who scored 138 runs.
He was supported well by Joe Root, who played yet another unbeaten knock of 71* runs, and a fiery knock from Jos Buttler, scoring 41 off 13 deliveries, helped England to post the highest-ever score of 387/3 in their 50 overs. Gurnoor Brar had the worst possible outing, 97/0 in his 10 overs.
Rohit Sharma special at Lord's
Coming out to chase, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had a stellar start to the run chase, as both looked in good shape and brought up fifties in good fashion. Gill was the first wicket to fall as he was dismissed by Adil Rashid on the score of 77 runs and missed out on a well-deserved century as the 146-run partnership was broken.
Rohit Sharma finally silenced the critics as he brought up a century in 84 balls and stitched a partnership with Virat Kohli of 113 runs off 86 deliveries, as Rohit was finally dismissed on the score of 138 runs off 110 deliveries, smashing 17 fours and five sixes in his amazing innings.
Kohli, who tried his best to score the runs quickly, was dismissed on the score of 74 runs off 60 balls. The pressure was piling on him as Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer fell in three balls, with Sam Curran picking the wicket, and Kohli was also dismissed by Curran. India's hopes of winning also diminished as they scored 360/7 in their 50 overs.
"We gave too many runs"- Shubman Gill slams India bowlers
Shubman Gill slammed his bowlers for leaking too many runs in the first innings and pointed out that it was the turning point of the match. He believed that the run chase was on if they had wickets in hand.
Shubman Gill said, "We gave too many runs in the last few overs and that's where the game went away from us. We knew if we had wickets in hand, we'd be in the game. (Positives) Almost everyone got runs in the matches. In this match, we didn't bowl well in the powerplay. Both their openers capitalised. In the death over, they took it too far away from us."
