England's 9-man Test coach shortlist includes RCB, Pakistan head coaches, LSG, RR bosses

England To Allow Andy Flower Skip Tests For IPL As Stephen Fleming Enters Coaching Race Report

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has officially begun its search for a new Test head coach, with a nine-man shortlist to replace Brendon McCullum. The list includes several experienced international coaches, the current Pakistan head coach, and successful Indian Premier League coaches.

England recently suffered a disappointing 2-1 home Test series defeat against New Zealand. After parting ways with Brendon McCullum and following Ben Stokes' retirement from Test cricket, the ECB is looking for an experienced coach to rebuild the team ahead of the 2027 Ashes series in Australia.

ECB Finalizes Nine-Man Shortlist for England Test Coach Role

Managing director Rob Key and selector Marcus North have reduced the list of candidates to nine names in the search for England's next Test head coach. According to the Daily Mail, the ECB is looking beyond English candidates as it tries to rebuild the team after losing seven of its last nine Tests.

Only two former England players feature on the shortlist - Jonathan Trott and Richard Dawson. Trott led Afghanistan to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, while Dawson guided Glamorgan back to Division One in county cricket.

The report added that former India head coach Rahul Dravid and England Lions coach Andrew Flintoff are not in contention. Dravid is reportedly not interested in returning to a full-time international coaching role, while the ECB believes Flintoff is not yet ready to take charge of the senior Test team.

Andy Flower and Justin Langer Among Leading Contenders

The ECB is reportedly looking for a coach with a more disciplined approach following England's recent struggles. Former England coach Andy Flower has emerged as the leading candidate after guiding England to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test rankings and winning three Ashes series during his previous stint.

Flower is currently the head coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. However, the report stated that the ECB is prepared to let him continue his franchise commitments if scheduling allows, making the role more attractive for the Zimbabwe-born coach.

Former Australia head coach Justin Langer is also among the frontrunners. Langer enjoyed major success with Australia, including a 4-0 Ashes series win, and currently serves as the head coach of Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.

Kumar Sangakkara, Stephen Fleming, and Mike Hesson Also in the Running

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara is another prominent name on the shortlist. The Rajasthan Royals director of cricket is widely respected for both his leadership and cricket knowledge, making him a strong candidate for the role.

Former Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming and Lucknow Super Giants global director of cricket Tom Moody are also being considered. Both have built successful coaching careers across international and franchise cricket.

The remaining names on the shortlist are Pakistan white-ball coach Mike Hesson and former Ireland head coach Adi Birrell. Both coaches have extensive international experience, giving the ECB several strong options as it searches for Brendon McCullum's successor.
