Rohit Sharma’s long-standing record for smashing the most sixes in the T20 International format has been broken, as an Austrian batter, Karanbir Singh, claims the No.1 spot in the ranking. With 207 sixes, Karanbir Singh is now the batter with the most sixes in the shortest format of the game.
Karanbir Singh broke former India skipper Rohit Sharma’s record on Sunday, June 28, during Austria’s match against Hungary. Karanbir, the captain of the national cricket team of Austria, smashed twelve 6s in this match and rewrote history in world cricket.
When was the record created?
On the previous Sunday, Austria was up against Hungary for a T20 match. Batting first, with the help of Karanbir’s 164-run innings from 57 balls, Austria registered an outstanding total of 322 runs in 20 overs, at 7 wickets.
A total well over 300 in a 20-over match was too much for Hungary to chase down. Karanbir Singh, who is an opener of the team, decorated the mind-blowing 164-run knock with 18 fours and 12 sixes. Hungary had no reply against the mammoth total. They collapsed for 165, and Austria won the match by 157 runs.
Who is Karanbir Singh and why is he special for the Austria cricket team?
The skipper of the Austria cricket team is considered the pride of the team as he owns multiple international records in the T20I format. Breaking Rohit Sharma’s record is the latest in his list of achievements.
With 205 sixes from 151 innings, Rohit Sharma was the batter with the most sixes in the T20I format. Karanbir surpassed the milestone in only 59 innings. As the Austrian batter is 30, with some more years still to come in his international career, the total number of 6s in his tally is expected to increase further.
