Former India captain MS Dhoni has received a notice from the Jharkhand State Housing Board over the alleged commercial use of his residential plot in Ranchi. The board flagged the issue as a possible violation of housing rules, and the matter could lead to further action if the allegations are found to be true.
Dhoni was recently seen training in the nets in Ranchi ahead of the IPL 2026. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter spent time batting as part of his preparations. He was retained by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for ₹4 crore as an uncapped player ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, under the revised retention rules.
Jharkhand Housing Board Issues Notice to MS Dhoni Over Residential Plot
The residential plot allotted to MS Dhoni was meant strictly for housing purposes. Authorities later found that the property was being used for commercial activities, raising concerns about a possible violation of the allotment rules.
Jharkhand Housing Board chairman Sanjay Lal Paswan confirmed that notices were issued to several individuals, including Dhoni, after the probe revealed the alleged misuse of residential plots in the city.
The land is located on Harmu Road in Ranchi, where Dhoni lived before shifting to his current home on Ring Road. The inquiry began after allegations surfaced that the plot was being used to run a diagnostic facility.
Following the findings, the housing board sent a notice to MS Dhoni, stating that the commercial use of the plot violated the terms set by the Jharkhand government. He has been asked to respond and explain the matter.
MS Dhoni Yet to Respond to Housing Board Notice Over Ranchi Plot
The residential plot was allotted to Dhoni in 2006 under the then Jharkhand government. The land was given for housing purposes, and the allotment came with specific conditions. Dhoni has not yet sent any response to the notice issued by the housing board.
The official stated that if Dhoni fails to reply or does not provide a satisfactory explanation, the board may begin the process to cancel the plot allotment. Any such step would be taken by following the prescribed procedures and regulations.
“A residential plot was allotted by the Jharkhand State Housing Board to cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, but it was found to be used for commercial purposes. We have issued notice to him for violation of rules and norms,” Sanjay Lal Paswan said.
The five-time champions endured a tough IPL 2025 campaign and finished last on the points table for the first time in league history. They managed only four wins and suffered 10 losses during the season. MS Dhoni scored 196 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 135.17.
Dhoni remains the most experienced player in IPL history. He has played 278 matches and scored 5,439 runs in the tournament. He also leads the list for wicketkeeper dismissals, with 154 catches and 47 stumpings.
After the disappointing season, CSK focused on rebuilding their squad at the IPL 2026 auction. The franchise signed nine players and invested heavily in uncapped Indian talent, picking up Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer for ₹14.20 crore each, the most expensive uncapped players in IPL history.
