India cricketer lands in serious trouble after drunken driving incident ahead of T20 World Cup

Indian cricket takes a jolt as a drink-and-drive case captures the headlines. Former India cricketer Jacob Martin crashed his car into three vehicles while allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol earlier on Monday.

A former Indian cricketer was booked by police for allegedly drinking and driving; the news spread quickly across social media platforms. The former cricketer is none other than Jacob Martin, former Baroda Ranji captain, who was booked by Akota police for reckless driving and driving under the influence, according to media reports. It was not the first time that Martin came into the news for the wrong reasons. In the past, he was caught several times by the police.

According to media reports, the former cricketer was heavily drunk while steering his SUV. It was around 2.30 am on Monday, near Malhar Point, when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into three cars parked by the roadside. Fortunately, there was no one injured.

The cars, parked by the roadside, were damaged significantly because of the incident. The owners of the damaged cars filed a complaint against the 53-year-old former cricketer. Based on the complaints of the damaged car owners, a case was registered against Jacob Martin under the BNS section related to rash and drunk driving.

Police are investigating the matter

According to the latest reports, the police are yet to receive Martin's medical report, and the investigation process is still ongoing. Though there is no official statement from the Baroda Cricket Association regarding the issue.

"He was visibly inebriated and unable to walk. He has been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving, endangering the personal safety of others, and other relevant sections. No casualties or injuries have been reported,” a police officer informed the media.

Who is Jacob Martin?

The former cricketer also represented India in the past. Jacob Martin played 10 ODIs to score 158 runs with an average of 22.57 and a strike rate of 47.73. But his domestic cricket stats are more attractive. He played 138 domestic matches and scored 9192 runs with an average of 46.65. These stats of Martin were supported by centuries and 47 fifties. In List A cricket, he has played 101 matches in which he has 2948 runs, powered by three centuries and 20 fifties.

Jacob Martin is remembered for leading Vodadara to their major Ranji Trophy title, defeating Railways in the 2000-01 season of India’s prestigious domestic tournament.

In 2011, the former Indian cricketer was under the spotlight when Delhi Police arrested him in a human trafficking case. He was accused of sending a man to the United Kingdom using a fake cricket team.
