Australia wrapped up the Ashes 2025-26 in style with a five-wicket win in Sydney, finishing the series 4-1 and giving veteran Usman Khawaja the perfect farewell from Test cricket.
Chasing the modest target of 160 runs, Cameron Green and Alex Carey held their nerve at the end, guiding the team home without any drama. Carey remained not out on 16, while Green finished on 22, sparking celebrations at the SCG. For the 39-year-old Khawaja, it was a fitting farewell, walking away with a series victory on home soil.

Australia had already retained the Ashes by winning the first three tests, while England managed to avoid a clean sweep by winning the fourth test in Melbourne, but the hosts bounced back in the final match and finished the home series in a dominant fashion.
Earlier on Day 5, England resumed at 302 for 8 with a lead of 119 runs. Their resistance did not last long, as they were bowled out for 342. Then, Australia began their chase with intent, scoring 10 runs in the very first over. Travis Head set the tone by hitting two quick boundaries.
Head made 29 runs, while Jake Weatherald and Marnus Labuschagne contributed 34 and 37 runs, respectively. Josh Tongue scalped three wickets in the final innings in the New Year’s Test. Australia was in a strong position from the start after making 567 runs in reply to England’s first innings total of 384 runs. In this match, Joe Root, Head, Steve Smith, and Jacob Bethell hit centuries.

With this win, Australia not only retained the number one position at the WTC 2025-27 Points Table but also boosted their points and PCT points, far ahead of the other top teams. Now, they have 84 points and 87.50 PCT points from 8 tests in the ongoing cycle, losing only one match at the MCG.

New Zealand is stationed at the second spot, followed by the defending champions South Africa, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. India is currently in a tough spot, sitting in the sixth spot with 52 points with four wins from nine games.
On the other hand, England slipped to the seventh spot with only 31.67 PCT points. They won only three tests from their 10 games in the ongoing WTC 2025-27 cycle.
