Suryakumar Yadav finally admits his poor form but cherishes his team's domination

The Indian T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has dominated Men's T20I cricket early in his career, but in recent times, he has marked a lean patch in his career for over 14 months. The batter lacks a half-century in over 20 games and has finally admitted to his lack of form, but also assures that he will make a stronger comeback.

India won the T20I series against South Africa by a margin of 3-1, but there are major glaring areas that the defending champions need to rectify before the ICC T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by India from the 7th of February.

One of the major issues for the Indian team has been the poor form of their skipper, Suryakumar Yadav. The Indian veteran of T20Is, was once regarded as one of the most highly rated players in the shortest format of the game.

“Maybe the only thing we couldn’t quite manage was finding Surya the batter," said Suryakumar Yadav

The 35-year-old was once regarded as one of the greatest players in the shortest format of the game; however, he has averaged less than 14 in 2025, and this marked the darkest chapter in his career.

After winning the fifth and final T20I against South Africa, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav accepted his flaws as a batter and also vowed to come back stronger in the format.

“Maybe the only thing we couldn’t quite manage was finding Surya the batter, I think he went missing somewhere! (smiles) But he’ll be back stronger. As a team, I’m really happy,” Suryakumar said at the post-match presentation.

“Whenever we were in trouble, someone always put their hand up and pulled us through. As captain, that’s very satisfying with the way this series went for us,” he added.

"We wanted that relentless intent, and tonight it worked beautifully,” said the satisfied Indian captain

The final T20I showed the Indian batting order's true calibre with the bat, especially with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma giving them a fiery start, and Tilak Varma's stupendous effort setting the stage for Hardik Pandya to hand India a rock-solid finish.

The Indian skipper said that his team wanted to play a certain brand of the game, and he is quite happy with the kind of cricket they played against South Africa.

“Yeah, I mean, from the start of the tournament, we wanted to play a certain brand of cricket. I am happy that we did exactly that. We didn’t try to do anything different. We wanted to express ourselves across all departments, and the results are right there for everyone to see,” said the Indian captain.

He also added that this is something the Indian team has been missing over the last few series. This was exactly how they wanted to bat. India wanted some relentless intent, and the way it had worked in the final game had pleased the Indian skipper.

Suryakumar Yadav to lose T20I captaincy after T20 World Cup

The Indian skipper is 35 years old and has lacked form for over 14 months now, while Suryakumar Yadav's finest innings was 47 runs against Pakistan. Having played for 22 games, he has managed to score just 218 runs, while he finished the South Africa home series with just 34 runs.

The right-handed batter scored his runs with an average of less than 14 and a strike rate of 117.87. With such concern over his form, he has been part of the playing XI only because he is the captain of the Indian team. Now, he might lose the captaincy after the end of India's World Cup campaign.

However, Suryakumar Yadav has shown glimpses of fine form in the IPL as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy whenever he has been relieved of captaincy duties.
