Shubman Gill humiliated in India Nets

Asia Cup 2025 India Squad- Shubman Gill announced vice-captain

Team India will begin their Asia Cup title defence on Wednesday (September 10) when they lock horns against the UAE in the second match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. The match is scheduled to be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Ahead of India's tournament-opener, their vice-captain, Shubman Gill, received a huge wake-up call. The right-handed batsman was reportedly clean bowled by a local bowler while he was batting in the nets. According to a report from PTI, Shubman Gill looked in good touch during the practice session as he played several good shots.

However, he had no answer to that one delivery from the local bowler as he was beaten by the delivery and was clean bowled. The ball reportedly beat his defence and uprooted the off stump.

Shubman Gill eyes impressive return:

After missing out on the T20 World Cup last year, Shubman Gill will be desperate to showcase his skills in T20Is in the Asia Cup. The right-handed batsman was not only recalled to the T20I setup for the continental championship but was named the vice-captain too.

"We obviously see some leadership qualities in him, and his form in England was what we were hoping for. [He] exceeded all our expectations, which is a great sign when there's so much pressure as captain," chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar said after announcing the squad last month.

Gill all but set to open alongside Abhishek Sharma

While Shubman Gill is set to play in the upcoming match, the questions remain over whether he will open the batting or play at No. 3. At present, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are the designated openers in the T20I side. If Samson gets the nod for the forthcoming match, Gill is likely to bat at No.3.

However, if the team management opts for Jitesh Sharma ahead of Samson, Shubman Gill is set to open the innings.

India to open their account vs the UAE

Meanwhile, Team India will be looking to start the tournament on a winning note and extend their domination in the Asia Cup. The Men in Blue are the reigning Asia Cup champions and are the firm favourites to win the ongoing edition as well.

They won the T20 World Cup last year and the Champions Trophy earlier this year. With momentum on their side, the Indian outfit will be eyeing another trophy.
