Watch: Marcus Stoinis scored his second T20 ton (124* in 63) on Tuesday (April 23), helping Lucknow Super Giants chase down Chennai Super Kings’ 210 in the last over of the IPL 2024 clash.
Led by a brilliant knock from the Chennai skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and a blistering fifty from Shivam Dube, CSK posted a formidable 210-4 on the board. LSG, who needed to overhaul the highest total in Chennai, did not have the greatest start as Quinton de Kock departed in the very first over to leave Lucknow reeling. Stoinis, who walked out at No.3, got going with twin fours in the third over and raced away to a 26-ball 50 even as KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal departed around him.
Stoinis, though, did not give up on the run chase. Along with Nicholas Pooran, he combined to score 70 runs for Lucknow in 39 balls but the West Indian’s departure in the 17th over of the innings pegged LSG back once more. Lucknow needed 53 more in 21 balls with a new batter, Deepak Hooda, at the crease.
A well-set Stoinis took on the responsibility, facing 15 of the last 21 legal deliveries, scoring 36 runs with two sixes and five fours, helping Lucknow to their second win over Chennai in this year’s competition.
Stoinis, who scored 32 in his last 10 balls, hit 13 fours and six sixes during his innings. His 124* was also the highest knock while chasing by any batter in the history of the IPL and he became only the third batter from Lucknow (after de Kock and Rahul) to score hundreds for the franchise.
This was also the highest successful run-chase in Chennai, beating a 12-year record, when Chennai chased down Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s 206 in 2012.
