Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Chandrakant Pandit has delivered an update on Mitchell Starc ahead of his team's crucial game against Delhi Capitals. KKR will be locking horns against the Delhi-based outfit at the Eden Gardens on Monday (April 29).
Mitchell Starc missed the game between KKR and Punjab Kings. In his absence, Dushmantha Chameera made his debut for the Kolkata-based outfit. The two-time IPL champions endured a nightmare with the ball against PBKS as they failed to defend 261 runs. Riding on Jonny Bairstow's century and Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh's whirlwind centuries, PBKS pulled off the historic chase in just 18.4 overs.
Why did Mitchell Starc miss the game against PBKS?
After playing in each of KKR's first seven games of the ongoing IPL 2024, Mitchell Starc missed the game against PBKS last week. The reason was a finger injury that he sustained during the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Speaking at toss for the PBKS game, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer had revealed that Mitchell Starc has cut his finger during their previous match. Later, KKR's fielding coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed the same in the post-match press-conference, saying:
"Starcy caught his finger in one of his studs in the last game. It's abrased on his bowling finger, he's obviously releasing from that finger and we just thought with that and Dushy [Chameera] being pretty fresh and ready to go that we give Dushy a game and give Starcy a chance to sort his finger out."
When will Mitchell Starc return?
On Sunday (April 28), KKR coach Chandrakant Pandit delivered a positive update on Mitchell Starc. The KKR coach stated that the Australian pacer is looking better and a call on his availability for the game against DC will be taken after seeing him in the nets.
"He is looking better now. He has recovered well. We will watch him in the nets and then take a call (about his availability)," said Pandit.
Mitchell Starc in IPL 2024:
Mitchell Starc has struggled to live up to the expectations in IPL 2024 so far. In a tournament where most of the bowlers have struggled to contain runs, the Australia star has also struggled to do well. KKR secured his services for a record fee of INR 24.75 crore but he has failed to justify the huge price tag so far. In seven games, he has picked up six wickets while conceding runs at 11.48 runs so far.
