While the seventeenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) is less than a week away, there is still very little clarity over where will the entire tournament be played. At present, the BCCI wants to conduct the entire IPL 2024 in India. However, they could be compelled to shift the competition outside the country due to the general elections.
The Election Commission of India has yet to announce the date of the general election. The delayed announcement is a big concern for the BCCI as well as the franchises as it could jeopardise their plans to host the entire tournament in India. The IPL schedule will depend a lot on the election dates since because BCCI will have to align the schedule with the general elections.
Last month, the BCCI announced the dates of the first 21 games of IPL 2024, scheduled to be played between March 22 and April 7. The board’s decision to not announce the full schedule could be another big hint that there is a possibility of IPL 2024 being shifted outside India in the coming days.
And while only time will tell how things unfold in the coming days, the Times of India’s Gaurav Gupta has reported that the second half of the tournament could be played in the United Arab Emirates. If it happens, it will not be the first time that IPL takes place outside the country due to general elections.
In 2009, the entire tournament was played in South Africa due to elections. Five years later, the first phase of the competition was played in the UAE. However, in 2019, the entire tournament took place in India even though the general elections were going on.

Franchises collecting passports from players ahead of IPL 2024:
In another development, the franchises have asked their players and other squad members to submit their passports. According to Dainik Jagran’s Abhishek Tripathi, the franchises have collected the passports for some visa work. It is a clear indication that the franchises want to remain prepared if the BCCI eventually decides to shift the tournament outside the country.
Tripathi also stated that the UAE will be the favorite to host the IPL if the Indian cricket board decides to conduct the competition at a neutral venue.
