Wanindu Hasaranga recently came up with a master plan to deal with the suspension imposed on him by the International Cricket Council (ICC). During the third ODI of the recently-concluded series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the leg-spinner was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match”.
Due to his conduct, Wanindu Hasaranga received a 50 percent fine and accumulated three demerit points for his offense. He was already on five demerit points and had to miss two T20Is against Bangladesh. The latest accumulation of the demerit points meant that he had breached the threshold of eight demerit points.
As per the rules, the eight demerit points could be converted into four suspension points. The four suspension points equate to a ban from two Tests or four ODIs or T20Is, whatever comes first.
Tabraiz Shamsi impressed by Wanindu Hasaranga:
With Sri Lanka’s next limited-overs assignment being the all-important T20 World Cup, Wanindu Hasaranga would have missed all four group games. However, the Sri Lanka star came up with a brilliant plan to ensure that he plays in the marquee event right from the start.
Having retired from the Test in August last year, he reversed his decision and made himself available for the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh. And shortly after he announced the decision, the ICC suspended him for the Test series. It means Wanindu Hasaranga will be eligible to play in the T20 World Cup from the very first game.
South Africa star Tabraiz Shamsi seems to be very impressed by Wanindu Hasaranga’s masterplan. The left-spinner took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to the news. Sharing a post where a user described the entire situation, Tabraiz Shamsi wrote: “Well played sir…well played.”

Talking about the T20 World Cup, it is scheduled to be played from June 1 to 29. Incidentally, South Africa and Sri Lanka are in the same group along with Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Netherlands. Before the T20 World Cup, Wanindu Hasaranga will also ply his trade in the upcoming IPL 2024.
