The 5th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) was played between the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 24.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field first in the match. This was the first match of Hardik Pandya as the skipper of the Mumbai Indians franchise and he didn’t receive a good reception from the crowd in Ahmedabad. He was booed by the fans several times and they bombarded the all-rounder with Rohit-Rohit chants.
Meanwhile, batting first, every GT batter made a good contribution and they posted a decent total of 168/6 on the board. The newly-appointed captain of GT, Shubman Gill, played a knock of 31 runs and he batted with a strike rate of 140.90. The top run-getter for the side in the innings was the youngster Sai Sudharsan, who smashed a brilliant 45 runs off 39 balls.
Chasing the target in the match, Mumbai Indians were off to a poor start as the star opener Ishan Kishan was out for a duck. Notably, the IPL 2024 is crucial for the young batter to make his return to the Indian team as he was recently snubbed from the BCCI central contracts list.
After the dismissal of Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma batted magnificently well and showed his class. He was involved in some terrific partnerships with youngsters and took MI very close to the win. The former Mumbai Indians captain was dismissed after scoring 43 runs off 29 balls.
The MI debutant Naman Dhir showcased his brilliant hitting while batting at the No.3 position, but he was able to score just 20 runs. Unlike Dhir, Dewald Brevis took his time but made sure that he made significant contributions. He chipped in with 46 runs and played a key role in MI getting closer to the win
However, in the end, Mumbai Indians lost the match by 6 runs as the star batters Hardik Pandya, Tim David and Tilak Varma weren’t able to do the job for the team.
For Gujarat Titans, Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma were the star performers with the ball and they made sure that the Mumbai Indians didn’t cross the finish line.
