India captain Rohit Sharma commented about the catch dropped by Ravindra Jadeja during the match against New Zealand on Sunday (October 22). Team India locked horns against the Black Caps at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association in Dharamsala.
Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first. Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami gave India a good start by dismissing the New Zealand openers cheaply to leave them reeling at 19 for 2. But Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell steadied the ship for their team and set the foundation for a big score by adding 159 runs for the third wicket.
Things could have been very different had Ravindra Jadeja managed to avoid a catch drop. It was the eleventh over of the innings when Ravindra was batting on only 12 when one of the best fielders in the world dropped him at backward point. It was a regulation catch but Ravindra Jadeja failed to hold on to it. The New Zealand batter made the most of the reprieve and went on to score 75 runs.
Rohit Sharma on Ravindra Jadeja’s dropped catch:
Fortunately for India, the dropped catch did not cost them the game as they went on to win it by 4 wickets. And after the game, captain Rohit Sharma was asked about India’s fielding during the match which was not up to the mark. He was also asked about Ravindra Jadeja’s dropped catch. In reply, the India captain said:
“The fielding is something we pride ourselves on. Today the fielding wasn’t clinical. Ravindra Jadeja is one of the best fielders in the world. These things happen. We know that fielding is something that will decide a lot of things going forward.”
Talking of the game, India crossed the finishing line in the 48th over as they successfully chased down 374. The hosts were reeling at 191 for 5 at one stage but a decisive stand of 78 runs between Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja took the team home. Kohli was out for 95 before Jadeja hit the winning four to seal India’s fifth win in a row in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
