Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer took a jibe at Michael Vaughan after England suffered a disappointing 69-run loss against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023. He hilariously asked about him after his team suffered a defeat.
Afghanistan were all over England at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. They batted and bowled extremely well and won their first game of the tournament. England on the other hand suffered their second loss of the tournament out of their third game.
Asked to bat first, half-centuries by Rahmanullah Gurbaz (80) and Ikram Alikhil (58) along with vital knocks from Ibrahim Zadran (28), Rashid Khan (23) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (28) powered them to a total of 284 runs. It seemed that they got below the par score.
But with the way they bowled, they were on the top right from the start. They kept chipping in with wickets at regular intervals as the spin trio of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman looked unplayable. They spun a web around the batters and made them look clueless.
Harry Brook (66) was the lone warrior for England as he batted beautifully. But Afghanistan spinners were on the top. Mujeeb ur Rahman and Rashid Khan picked three wickets each whereas Mohammad Nabi picked two scalps as Afghanistan bundled out the opposition for 215 runs to win the game by 69 runs.

England captain Jos Buttler was disappointed with the way his side performed. He admitted that this defeat would hurt them and they would now need to come back stronger. Speaking at the post-match presentation, he explained:
“Disappointing to win the toss and concede that many, me missing that first ball down the leg side set the tone. Credit to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today. It came down to execution, we weren’t quite at the level we’d like to be with both bat and ball. They have some fantastic bowlers, the dew didn’t come in as much as we expected, the ball held up a bit too.
You got to let these defeats hurt, there’s no point in getting over things too quickly, we need to reflect. There’s a lot of character in this group, we need to show a lot of resilience and come back stronger. We need to have guys being able to perform under pressure and that’s what all of us will be working hard towards.”
England will be next seen in action when they take on South Africa on Saturday (21st October).
