England have been without Ben Stokes in their starting XI for the first two matches of their World Cup campaign, as he recovers from a hip niggle. But there look to be positive signs that he could return for them against Afghanistan. Joe Root said of Stokes’ fitness in a press conference on Saturday, October 14: “Ben seems to be getting better day on day. He trained really well last night, obviously had a long bat, did his running, seems to be improving, so all good signs ahead of tomorrow.”
The defending champions have another fitness concern after Chris Woakes fell ill earlier in the week. If he’s not fit to play the fixture, England will need to draft in one of Gus Atkinson, David Willey or bring back Moeen Ali for another spin option.
Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott kept quiet over potential changes to his XI in the pre-match press conference. Both XIs will be confirmed at the toss.

It’s hard to see the result going any other way than in England’s favour. Afghanistan were torn apart by India and struggled against Bangladesh in their opening match. They would do well to restrict England to a respectable margin of victory.
