Axar Patel carried the hopes of the Indian fans in the end during the Asia Cup 2023 game between India and Bangladesh at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. He batted exceptionally well in the end and almost won the game for his side in a pressure situation.

Axar Patel put in hard yards but he also put his body on the line. He got himself hurt as he tried to save his wicket during the fag end of the game. The all-rounder came down the track to hit the ball out of the ground but he missed it and while trying to enter the crease back, he hurt his hand.

However, if this was not enough, Axar Patel dealt another blow to his hand a few balls later. It was during the 46th over when the all-rounder played a lofted shot to Mahedi Hasan by coming down the track. He didn’t get the elevation and hit straight to long on fielder

Towhid Hridoy, who was stationed there, grabbed the ball and threw it at the non-striker’s end. The throw hit Axar Patel on the hand as he didn’t keep his eye on the ball and was hurt. The physios came out and the all-rounder got heavy taping on his left arm.

Axar Patel played a magnificent innings with the bat and brought his side back into the game. After the wicket of Shubman Gill (121), it seemed that India would lose the game. But the all-rounder played some staggering strokes to pressure on Bangladesh.

Axar Patel scored 42 runs off 34 balls and also smashed three fours and two sixes in his innings. He tried his best and took India close but couldn’t finish the game.

After the match, India captain Rohit Sharma lauded Axar Patel for his magnificent innings. He lauded him for his character and also heaped rich praise on Shubman Gill. He explained:

“Axar batted brilliantly but couldn’t finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers. Gill’s hundred was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows exactly how he wants to play. Pretty clear on what he wants to do for the team. Look at his form over the last year. Pretty solid against the new ball. Works really hard, there’s no optional practice for Gill.”
