Asia Cup Winners List. Asia Cup is a continental championship played in two formats – ODI and T20I. It is the only continental championship in the game. While the Asia Cup started as an ODI tournament before it started alternating between the ODI and T20I formats every 2 years.

The format depends on the upcoming ICC World event. To date, 16 editions of the Asia Cup have been played. India are the most successful side in the history of the competition, having won it 7 times, followed by Sri Lanka and Pakistan who have won it 6 and 2 times respectively.

1984 Asia Cup winners list:

The first edition of the Asia Cup took place in 1984. The tournament was hosted by the United Arab Emirates. Three teams – India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan – participated in the first-ever Asia Cup.

It was a round-robin format tournament where each team played against the others once. India were the winner after beating both Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka were the runner-up after winning one while Pakistan ended their campaign without any victory.

1986 Asia Cup winners list:

Sri Lanka hosted the second edition of the Asia Cup in 1986. India decided against participating in the competition due to poor bilateral relations with Sri Lanka. In India’s absence, Bangladesh made its debut in Asia Cup. Apart from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Pakistan participated in the competition too.

Talking about the format, each team played against the other once before the top two teams played in the final. Sri Lanka and Pakistan made it to the final after winning 1 and 2 games respectively. In the final, Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 5 wickets.

In 1995, the tournament was played in the UAE. A total of 4 teams participated in the competition – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The tournament was played in a round-robin format where each team played the other once and the top two teams made it to the final. India and Sri Lanka made it to the final where the former won the title decider by 8 wickets.

Sri Lanka hosted the Asia Cup in 1997. The tournament was contested by the hosts, reigning champions India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. In the league stage, Sri Lanka won all of their 3 games while India and Pakistan managed one win each.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, once again failed to open its account. Sri Lanka and India played the final again before the hosts won the game to clinch the title for the second time.

Sri Lanka locked horns against Pakistan in the final. In the title-decider, Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 39 runs to win their first-ever Asia Cup.

Pakistan hosted the Asia Cup in 2008. Six teams – Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, and Hong Kong – participated in the tournament.

Group A consisted of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates while Group B consisted of India, Pakistan, and Hong Kong. After the league stage and the Super 4s, Sri Lanka and India made it to the final. In the final, Sri Lanka thrashed India by 100 runs to win the continental championship.

Sri Lanka were the host for the 2010 edition of the continental championship. Only 4 teams – Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh – participated in that edition. As per the format, each team played against the other once in the league stage and the top two teams qualified for the final.’

In the final, India and Sri Lanka were up against each other. India beat the Islanders by 81 runs to reclaim the Asia Cup.
